What Is Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic acid is a commonly used compound in cosmetic products and works wonders for exfoliation, acne, blackheads, & oily complexions. It is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that targets the oily glands in skin, penetrates the oil glands, and dissolves dead skin. Though it is beneficial for the skin, but can cause skin itching and rashes when used in excess.
Why DGCI Banned Skincare Containing Excessive Salicylic Acid?
The DCGI has not officially banned the import registration of skincare products containing excessive salicylic acid. However, the DCGI has implemented various governmental rules focusing on enhancing the safety & compliance of imported cosmetics. Here are the following reasons why DCGI cancels the import registration of cosmetics with high salicylic acid concentration:
- Consumer safety: Salicylic acid is beneficial for exfoliation & acne treatment, whereas excess use of salicylic acid can cause skin irritation & adverse reactions. - Alignment with International standards: DCGI aims to align indian cosmetic standards with those of other countries

What Types Of Cosmetic Products Are Restricted From Import?
Cosmetics are not allowed to be imported if:
- They expire within 6 months of the import date.
- They contain banned ingredients like hexachlorophene.
- They were tested on animals after November 2014.
